As the Smead Value Fund Manager, he will explain the competitive advantages the passive index has over active managers.  The primary advantages are the obvious (management fees/mutual fund expenses), the less obvious (trading costs) and the least obvious (long holding periods).  By looking at the index advantages and disadvantages, a prescription for managing common stocks actively steps out in plain view. Once in plain view, this prescription provides useful input into identifying active managers or using passive investments when allocating to an asset class. In this way a natural attraction to long duration common stock investing can be established. What could be a more contrary thouoght process and discipline to consider in the middle of 2010?
